CWM Technology Demo
Object Management Group Technical Committee Meeting Cambridge, Massachusetts Demo Objective This is a technology demo that shows CWM-enabled data warehousing tools interchanging metadata with other CWM-enabled data warehousing tools. The demo is based on the Common Warehouse Metamodel initial submission presented to the OMG on September 17, 1999. A more comprehensive demo will accompany the final submission. Demo Description The Beverage Company, Inc. is a fictional soft drink manufacturing company. They have created a star schema for doing decision support analysis. Two of the dimension tables are TIMETABLE (the time dimension) and the PRODUCTS dimension table. Table descriptions are shown below: TBC.Timetable TBC.Products TBC uses tools and repositories from a number of vendors in their various departments and wants to make the metadata for these tables available to all of them. The tables currently reside in a DB2/UDB database. The tools and repositories involved include:
This demo shows interoperability between all of the above tools. The metadata for the TIMETABLE and PRODUCTS tables will be exported from DB2/UDB and stored in UREP. The metadata will then be exported from UREP and imported by any or all of the other tools. The other tools will also import the metadata exported directly from DB2/UDB. Express RAA and Essbase will use the metadata to create OLAP schemas; XML Mediator will use the metadata XMI file exported from UREP to create tables in Oracle 8i and DB2/UDB; and Visual Warehouse and Team Connection will import metadata from UREP. This scenario clearly illustrates the incredible potential of CWM to enable metadata interchange among heterogeneous data warehousing applications.
